Cant say for sure but if your 400 is like my c175 engine in the 350 you must remove the pan to get that flat filler bar nether the bottom one-half of the seal holder to exist able to slip that half down to articulate the flywheel mounting flange. I merely put my rebuild job dorsum together 2 wks ago. Took the advise of a local so called tractor mech-and will suspension it in half once more in the virtually future to do it over. I oiled the seal lightly and left the ends up a slight amount equally per his advise. and it leaks. Seems to be getting ameliorate simply I dont have much hope for it. Adjacent time will soak the seal overnight--maybe iii days .LOL John

You will have to pull the pan. And then the two screws in the lesser half the four screws in the top one-half and the 2 screws that get from the top half down into the lesser half and then information technology should come off. Dig the onetime felt out of each one-half. After you clean it up practiced concur the two halfs together every bit they are on the block and run into how much warped they are where they fit together. If much warage I would get new, because is a bad place for leak when you put it back together. Stuff every bit much new felt equally you can in the groove as you can. I empathise from some on this forum that some new felts are to long. When I was doing this therty years ago the felt was the right length and we used it all. After you stuf the felt in the grooves but some oil on it and reinstall on block. Tighten the two screws that go downward through to the bottom half starting time, but subsequently y'all have all screws started. Use a proficient gasket sealer on all parts. Hope this helps.

WHat CNKS said!Just take information technology apart, make clean it upwardly and put it back together.Ive heard saok the seal and not soak the seal so Ill leave that upward to others to determine for yous.Ive heard soaking the seal and then putting information technology all back together with the seal wicked in oil tin can crusade the housing to crack.Ive done information technology like this with good result.Soak it good like overnite, then ring out the backlog and put it in.I have merely done this a couple of times or so and have never had any problems with annihilation breaking or wearing out quicker.

I didnt let the seal ends come across at the seam betwixt the two housings.I left one end long so that the end of the bottom seal was in the top housing and one eand of the peak seal was in the bottom housing.Understand?

do you mean the U shaped gasket that has two 1/2 holes cut in the exterior of the two short sides? this is the gasket that has to be replaced past removing the oil pan. Kinda disruptive to explicate, but if yous await in a parts book I think you will understand how information technology goes. The same basic rear seal design was used on the H thru the 450.

I've done this one time, and don't remember much about it, so in that location must not have been much to information technology -- so that makes me an adept? Not trying to exist funny, just take it apart and put it back together. Soak the seal in engine oil before installation.

Mine was off, but I had it off for other reasons, and can't call back if it was really necessary. Endeavor information technology without removing information technology -- nothing to lose, unless there is danger of getting crud into the pan.
